The Levantine Foundation

The Development of The Levantine Foundation Conservation Training Project

In 2008, following the training delivered to a number of the Egyptian conservators during the conservation campaigns at Deir al-Surian, The Levantine Foundation embarked on a conservation training programme in collaboration with Museum & Art Advisory LLC, New York and the Coptic Museum in Cairo.

The goal of the programme is to provide guidance and technical support to conservators and museologists working in the leading Egyptian museums and, to create opportunities for exchange of knowledge between the west and the Near East. The objective is to establish a better understanding of conservation, protection and maintenance of collections, and to aid the development of skills and the creation of a safer environment for employees and museum collections alike. The outcome will be more qualified museum personnel, employment opportunities and the preservation of Egyptian heritage for future generations.

An Honorary Board of Advisors composed of museum and conservation specialists from Europe, Egypt and the United States was established to advise on the development of the project to familiarise museum professionals in Egypt with current museum standards and practices. This will include curatorial responsibilities, conservation, and collection care and exhibition design.
